Dental Implants in the Virgin Islands

A Brief Summary of the Following Page

  • Functionality: Dental implants provide a strong foundation for artificial teeth, closely mimicking natural teeth in appearance and functionality, enhancing confidence, and preserving facial structures.
  • Consultation: Prospective dental implant patients undergo detailed evaluations, including medical history and dental examinations, to assess suitability and address any concerns or questions they might have.
  • Eligibility: Ideal candidates for dental implants should have good bone density and dental health, and they should also be non-smokers. Pre-existing dental issues, such as gum disease or tooth decay, need treatment prior to implant placement.
  • Procedure: The dental implant procedure involves two phases. These phases include surgical implantation of titanium posts into the jawbone and, after healing, the attachment of artificial teeth. This is typically completed within six to eight months.

Dental implants offer a durable and aesthetically pleasing solution for replacing missing teeth, allowing our patients to regain their confident smiles and functional bite.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are custom-made to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that closely mimic the look, feel, and function of natural teeth. When someone who has lost teeth undergoes the procedures necessary for dental implants, they regain the ability to eat almost anything, smile with confidence, and know that their teeth appear natural. Their facial contours will also be maintained.

The implants are very small titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, and that bond creates a strong foundation for artificial teeth.  In addition, dental implants can be an essential part of maintaining your facial structure and preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing or damaged.

Dental implants are changing the way people live! With dental implants, patients regain the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh, and enjoy life.

What to Expect in an Evaluation for Dental Implants

If, like other dental patients, you feel dental implants are the best choice for you, we ask that you undergo a dental or radiographic examination, general consultation, and health history review. During these consultation visits, your specific needs and considerations will be addressed by our team or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon whom we recommend through a referral.

Your questions, worries, and concerns are important to us. Our team is dedicated to working with you very closely to help make your procedure a success. During your evaluation to determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants, we’ll ask you questions about your expectations, medical history, and additional essential pieces of information.

Feel free to contact us at VI Dental and ask any questions. We’ll be happy to provide helpful answers so you feel comfortable and confident under our care.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Generally speaking, if you need to replace one or more of your teeth, you are likely a strong candidate to receive dental implants. However, it is necessary to have suitable bone density, have otherwise solid dental health, and refrain from certain lifestyle habits. For example, smoking tobacco products may make you a less-than-ideal candidate for implants.

If you have a dental health issue – such as gum disease, tooth decay, or other concerns – your dentist may require you to treat these before receiving any implants. Treatment for these health problems may vary based on your specific needs and circumstances.

What Does the Dental Implant Procedure Look Like?

Dental implants are surgically placed into the jaw bone. Small posts are then attached to the implant, slightly peeking over the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.

For most patients, implant placement requires two surgical procedures.

First, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three to six months after your surgery, the implants will be beneath the surface of your gums. At this point, the implants will begin gradually bonding with the jawbone. Most patients should wear temporary dentures and eat a liquid and soft food diet during this time. During this initial healing period, your restorative dentist will design the final bridgework or denture, which can provide a valuable boost to both function and aesthetics.

Once your implants have properly bonded to the jawbone, the second phase begins. Your provider will uncover the implants and place and attach a small healing collar. Then, your dental provider can start creating and enhancing your new teeth.

Your provider will take an impression of your teeth. After taking an impression, posts or attachments can be connected to your implants. We then create the replacement teeth over the posts or attachments. The entirety of the implant procedure usually takes six to eight months, but the long-term commitment is worth it. Most patients do not experience any disruption in their daily life.
